Unfitted kitchens.
To be transparent, until recently I had never heard the term. I just saw one for the first time in 2012 when spending 3 months in Italy. One of the AirBnB’s that we stayed at was a 13th century farm house in Tuscany and it was an unfitted kitchen though I wouldn’t have called it that. I just thought that it didn’t have traditional cabinets. Turns out, that is a thing.
Once I discovered them, I have been in love!!! These are the most beautiful spaces. All unique with their own personalities and something to get excited about.
Something that I didn’t know until I started going through this process, is that in Italy, home owners take their kitchen with them. Confused? So was I.
What do you mean “take their kitchen’s”?
They literally take the cabinets off the wall.
This is actually quite confusing and hilarious at the same time. That said, I wanted to redo the kitchen anyway as I thought it would function better with a different layout since it is a small space.
On my search for kitchen idea, I came across these kitchens without matching cabinets and with real pieces of furniture in them.
Note: if this is how the homes are then yes, taking the kitchen I understand but in my case, their kitchen was fitted cabinetry. Still hilarious though as I envision them taking the cabinets off the wall. But now I don’t have to do demo.
I was going back and forth on if I wanted fitted kitchen or not but the more research I do, the more I feel that I want to turn back the hands of time and build something unfitted, unique and the personality of the house.
What are your thoughts? Do you like unfitted kitchens? Have you seen there before now?
